Lunch Meat and Protein drinks Empty Lunch Meat and Protein drinks

Post  zach t Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:06 pm

Hello all,
As a relevtivly new crossfit dieter (dietee?) i am reading and being told to up my protein intake, and i am. But, a good majority( about 2 meals a day) i use lunch meat as my protein. Is that a problem? Chuck said I was ok, but what things should I look for on this lunch meat? What kinds should i get, what things are signs of being bad for me, and how often could I eat this stuff. Its just too easy to pass up now, I dont have barely any time to cook, and my fridge is not big enough for a rotisserie chicken.

Topic 2-Protein drinks
Hubie, i see you down your post wod treat almost 4 days a week and I gotta ask, what is in that purple frothy concoction? Basically, i have whey protein powder and every once in a while i will have a scoop or two with an apple in the morning but I dont know if this is a good protein source. again, its easy, and it doesnt taste like hell, so i drink them about once every 2 days. What kind of powdered protein is best? When should i( if ever) indulge in one?

Please, help me.

Thanks,

Zach t

Topic #1 - Lunch Meat
Lunch meat is a great source of protein. 1.5 oz per block. Lean turkey is the best. I also get the 98% fat free ham that's on sale.
Everyday for lunch (I eat two lunches) I mix ham and turkey (4.5 oz's) with one slice of American cheese. That's 4 blocks of P. I'd avoid bologna, salami, and any other "fatty" meats. I go through about 1.5 lbs of Turkey and 1.5 lbs of Ham each week. I use the cheese because it takes the edge off of the meats, so does the liberal amount of mustard I use. Smile

Topic #2 - Shake
Ingredients:
Ice, Water,
P - Less then one scoop of Whey protein (about 20g, I want a little more P in my snack)
C - One cup of frozen blueberries
F - Two hand fulls of Fitness Mix nuts and seeds.

Its a perfect 2 block snack, or as I call it my post wod treat. I sometime makes a shake in the morning when I'm running late and cannot make breakfast. I know Chuck does the same thing. Shakes with Whey and fruit are an awesome smack/meal.

Everybody remember, get your fat in every meal! That is your source of energy. You should all be carrying around a good source of fat to eat with every meal.
Also, don't be afraid to ask any of use at class advise regarding your diet. I understand not know what the hell I should eat, I was there 8 months ago.

For lunch meat - I always go to the deli for fresh sliced. Avoiding the pre-packaged meats are going to bring down the amount of nitrates and sodium in your diet. The up-side to the pre-packaged though is it lasts longer than the fresh stuff...so for those of you still in college, it might be a decent trade off to save some money. If I do buy pre-packaged, I always go with Oscar Meyers 'NATURAL' turkey and ham.

Hubie - What is the block breakdown of those 3 ingredients? (Protein powder, Blueberries, Fitness mix) I'm just trying to figure out how that makes a 2 block snack.

I call bullshit on both.

1.) Deli meat has waaay to much sodium to be a good supply of protein other than once in a while. Keep eating it and tell me what your heart has to say when you're my age.
If you're going to eat it (and I do) get turkey without any added flavor or other bullshit. also, ask for the low sodium version. Trust me, its there.

2.) Eat all the powders, pills, creatine you want. Your body absorbs essential nutrients best from food, not supplements. Those GNC sales are a waste of money. Stop trying to force your body into a shape that you think it needs to be. Eat right, do the WODs with fidelity and all is as it should be. There is no pill, there is no easy road.

Thanks a lot higley. Im starting to go completely "paleo", or so I think. I started talking to a women who studys nutrition and i told her this and she asked me where i bought all of my game meat. What? I'm pretty much just buying skinless chicken breast, bags of tuna, some low sodium turkey lunch meat, and some roast beef lunch meat. What else should i add/remove. Also, as far a veggies go, i need to up them, but its tough to keep them fresh with such a small fridge. Any suggestions. Previously i was practically pounding fruit, basically 2 peices at breakfast lunch and dinner but i know i need to eat more vegg and lay off all the sugar. Chuck tipped me off to you being educated in the paleo department so I figured i'd try and utilize your knowledge. The zone was a great way to start and i started reading the living in the zone book but im just like you in that I do not want to measure food. I want to eat well and preform well and so far i'm not doing too great in either dept. Also, are eggs cool on the paleo? God i would miss them. Keep posting your wod times man, it gives me somethin to look forward to(eventually).

The paleo book I have says that eggs are ok, but to only have a half-dozen or so a week due to fat content.

Did your friend say anything about where she got her game meat? It's hard to find free-range anything, let alone find affordable free-range meats, and I don't have time to go out and shoot my dinners.

she was just this lady that I met rock climbing drew. She didnt follow the diet herself but her understanding was that I ate all open range meat, which is very much not the case. Sorry to confuse you. Thanks for the heads up on eggs, i always considered them dairy which is not allowed on the diet.
